Alright, I said that I would write a bit about Sunday nights service. We were at a local private school for a praise and worship night and a small bit of teaching.
You know, it is good to hear others speak. Don't get me wrong, having a home church and a church family is great, but don't you find that when things come from others, outside the family, it sometimes is more clear? or you are more receptive? Just think of how your kids behave at others houses...certain ones of mine behave WAY better!!
Anyhow, the speaker was a missionary who has been all over the world, specifically Spain. He is in our town right now coing something or other at the college right now.
He spoke on prayer. I have sat through many services on prayer, but for some reason this one just jumped out at me. I think it was the way he presented it.
John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
Many times when we pray for things we use verse 14. Ask anything in My name and I will do it. Great, we need a new vehicle, right? So we should use this verse? Here is where we need to remember that we can make the Bible say anything we want it to say. We need to read everything in context.
In verse 12 & 13 it talks about the works that God has done, and those who believe in Him will do even GREATER WORKS...IF WE ASK...
The speaker said, we would all have to look for another scripture for a new vehicle...
This verse is set aside for the greater works of God, that He will do through us. It doesn't matter what we do, if we are a principal...who is running the school..you or God; if you are a doctor, who is treating patients...you or God; if you are a business person...who is running your business...you or God.
So, it hit me...like the Subway commercials, I am a mom/housewife/teacher etc... (the list could go on and on). Am I doing all this in my own strength? If so, why? Why should I not be asking God to work through me, even if I am home all day. Wouldn't my day go smoother? I know this already, I have learned this already, it just hadn't hit me in the head/heart like it did the other night.
That, however, was a side note to the actual message. He had said that he knew someone who had listed off 37 people that they wanted to see saved. The person decided that they would show up to all of their houses and talk to share about God with them. A number of people jsut sent them away. They didn't want to hear about God at all.
This person went home and prayed and asked God what he should do and God told him to pray for them. So, every day this person prayed over his list and after a year, 27 people had been saved. Prayer is so powerful, when you aim to do the "greater work" and ask in His name...it will be given done!!
He went on and shared story after story of missionaries and church planters and the such and they were just awesome to hear about. So, I was left with the thought, am I trying to reach others on my own? Or am I asking in His name for His help and He is doing everything through me?
It was a great service and I was happy that we went after all. I don't think this came out exactly as I thought it would, but it has now been a few days. Oh well. It stuck with me, and that is what matters. So, makes sense or not...maybe someone can benefit from this...
I agree about hearing the Word from others... that's why I enjoy going to the LTT's, GTT's, and Leader's times away. To get as much as I can from others... especially since....
ReplyDeleteI get to listen to our Pastor on Sunday and on Monday and on Tuesday and on Wedneday and on Thursday and on Friday... you get the jist!!
:-)
