We actually didn't go through the bank the first time we got a mortgage, we went through a mortgage broker. We had more options with them. We are self-employed so we found favour doing it this way. I'm not in the banking industry so I don't know which is better, but for us it worked.
It wasn't until years later that the our bank was willing to deal directly with us.
This will work out for you, I really believe that, it just may take some time.
In the midst of all this you can't let yourself be discouraged. When one door seems to close -- there's always a window.
I still say keep focused on getting the house ready, finish painting, organizing and keeping it clean - ready for an agent at any moment.
On Sunday morning I really feel the message I got, "Be prepared" wasn't just for those who want to reach the mission field... We need to be prepared at any moment for what God will do.
I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm sorry, Ruth. Lisa is right, though. There are other options. Things will work out, I know they will!

One step at a time...
